How do you define ’place’?

We came across a great definition for ‘place’ in the Queensland Gallery of Modern Art magazine the other day, promoting their ‘Place Makers: Contemporary Queensland Architects‘ exhibition.

‘Place’ can be understood as the result of fusing physical space with the embodied experience of it.  ‘Place’ in architecture can arise from a considered response to elements such as local topography and climate, social customs and historical and personal memory.”

The complex mixture, distilled into built form, generates local identity and enriches the daily experience of those who live in it.”

This definition sums up how we feel about place making in Urban Design.
