Westwood Urban Renewal

Westwood is a $600 million joint venture between international residential developer Urban Pacific Limited and the State Government’s Department of Families and Communities, in conjunction with the City of Port Adelaide and City of Charles Sturt.

Previously one of the lowest income regions in Australia, the developers were struggling with how to avoid the typical social problems that are often associated with low-income housing. In order to create an affordable community where people would chose to live, THG conducted an extensive charette process that involved the whole community, from developers and Council right through to the residents. The key was creating a rich public space system that included community elements, mixed use, retail and commercial.

Emphasising the social and community aspects meant THG were able to deliver a top-quality design that was recognised by the industry with an Award for land development and planning. The affordable opportunity created a more urban and suburban living outcome only 8kms from the centre of the city of Adelaide with a diversity of housing forms as well as mixed use capable of enriching the community facilities and services whilst ultimately building social cohesion between existing and new residents.
